There may be instances in which a student needs extra time or extra attempts on a quiz or needs to take the quiz at a different time. Below are instructions on how to provide these accommodations in Canvas.

Extending the Time Limit on a Quiz

To give students extra time on a quiz, you can extend the time.
- First, publish the timed quiz.
- Click on the quiz title.
- Select Moderate This Quiz on the right-hand side.

- - Select the Pencil icon in the last column and in the row assigned to that student.

- Type in the number of extra minutes allowed in the Extra Time on Every Attempt [1] field (for example, if the quiz is normally 2 hours for students but this particular student needs 3 hours, type in 60 minutes in the extra time field). Then click on Save.

- If the student is already in process of taking the quiz, you can extend the time by clicking on the Clock icon in the time column and in the row assigned to that student.

Note: If you have set an available until date that ends before the time extension for a student, you will also need to extend the until date for them.

Give Students an Extra Attempt on a Quiz

To give students an extra attempt or re-open a quiz to a student, go to Moderate this Quiz and click on the pencil icon as shown above. Type 1 in the Extra Attempts [1] box.

Give Students an Alternative Due Date and/or Start and End Times for an Assignment or Quiz

To give students an alternative due date and/or start and end times to complete an assignment, you can set an alternative due date and availability dates for them.
- Edit the assignment or quiz (or click on +Assignment or +Quiz if it's a new assignment or quiz).
- At the bottom of the page, under the "Assign to" section, select the +Add button.

In this second box, under "Assign to", type in the student's name that needs the extension and select their name in the dropdown. Change the Available from and until dates to the new dates.

Repeat for each student that needs an extension. You will notice that the first box will change from "Assign to Everyone" to "Assign to Everyone Else".
Select Save and Publish (or Save if it's an existing assignment).

The assignment will now look something like this, indicating that there are differentiated due dates set up.
