Create a Peer Review Assignment
When creating an assignment, you can require students to complete a peer review of another student's work.
To set up the peer review, go to the Assignments section and click on the title of the assignment you wish to assign a peer-review to. Then click Edit.
Check the box next to "Require Peer Reviews" [1]. Choose "Manually Assign Peer Reviews" [2] if you wish to choose who each student is assigned to peer review. Choose "Automatically Assign Peer Reviews" [3] if you want Canvas to do this randomly.
Manually Assigning Peer Reviews
Click on Save (or Save and Publish if this is a brand new assignment).
Once you have saved the assignment, click on the "Peer Reviews Links to an external site." link on the right-hand side.
Click on "Give ___ another submission to assess" under the first student's name.
Choose the student you wish to assign them [1] and then click on Add [2]. Repeat this process for each student.
You can click on the + icon next to "Give ___ another submission to assess" [3] if you want to assign more than one peer review to each student.
In this section, you can also send reminders [1] to students who haven't completed the peer review yet. Students with a check mark next to their name have been peer reviewed; students with an exclamation mark next to their name have not.
Automatically Assigning Peer Reviews
If you choose "Automatically Assign Peer Reviews", you will need to specify how many reviews each student should have [1]. You also need to specify when the peer review assignment will start [2].
Then click on Save (or Save and Publish if this is a brand new assignment).
When using automatic peer review assignments, students cannot review others before the due date of the original assignment or before they have submitted their own assignment. This is intentional to prevent cheating. If you choose to manually assign peer reviews, you can override this.
Student Instructions
Once the peer review is set up, students will see the peer review assignment under their To Do list on the right-hand side of their course homepage or Canvas dashboard.
Students can download the file [1] or click on View Feedback [2] to leave their comments.
To complete the peer review, students are required to leave at least one comment in the overall comments section. If you include a rubric, they are also required to complete the rubric.
